Statement of the problem

The Nigerian economy is shaped by illusions that run counter to achieving development-oriented governance. The most worrying thing in the country is the threat of unemployment. Nigeria faces the challenge of curbing rising crime rates, unprecedented increases in prostitution, high death rates and the political wrongs that can be attributed to youth unemployment. Tourism is one of the fasted growing economic sectors generating employment and fostering growth in many countries. Tourism industry is playing a great role in today’s world economic by contributing greatly to social transformation and the global economic’.

In recognition of the depth and breadth of the consequences of tourism industry in alleviating poverty and national development, there has been a wide spread interest in recent years for the development of tourist industry.  The potential of tourists in Nigeria, when revived, can create more jobs and attract more foreign tourists to Nigeria. Therefore, tourism, which is in a promising situation in Nigeria with great potential, should be the focus of any interested explorer in Nigeria as a way to revive the economy and improve the overall quality of tourism and the wealth of the host community.

Therefore, the need for promotion of such tourism in developing economies like Nigeria is of paramount importance since it brings about a great distribution of income and wealth, employment and a host of other positive, economic uplifting factors. Hence this study seeks to investigate into the problems and prospect of tourism in employment creation in Nigeria.

1.3 Objective of the study

The broad objective of this study is to investigate the problem and the prospect of tourism in employment creation in Nigeria. Specifically, the study will:

  1. Investigate the role of tourism in employment creation in Nigeria.
  2. Examine the problems of tourism in creating employment in Nigeria.
  3. Examine the causes of the problems of tourism in creating employment in Nigeria.
  4. Find out the prospect of tourism in creating employment in Nigeria.
